Late Gen. Mamman Shuwa

We did not kill General Shuwa – Boko Haram

The fundamentalist group Boko Haram on Sunday denied allegations that it was behind the killing of Maj-Gen Mamman Shuwa and other politicians in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Maj-Gen Mamman Shuwa was gunned down on Friday in his house at Gwange in Maiduguri along with his guest.

In a teleconference with newsmen in Maiduguri by one Abu Mohammed Abdul-Aziz, who claimed to be the spokesperson for the group, the sect said it regards late General Shuwa with high esteem as he has never said anything wrong about them.

The Boko Haram’s spokesman described the late General as a responsible person and warned those spreading rumors that the group is responsible for his killing to desist from such.

He also said the five persons nominated by the Boko Haram as mediators with the federal government as still the authentic people they trust can become witness in the event of any bridge of the negotiation.

General Shuwa, veteran and former member of the Supreme Military Council, was gunned down on Friday in his house at Gwange in Maiduguri along with his guest, shortly before the Juma’at prayer.

Forty other people were said to have been killed in a bloodbath in another part of Maiduguri on Thursday night.

The late General, who was buried at about 10:30 a.m on Saturday at Gwange Cemetery, was described by many as a leader who lived a life worthy of a statesman.
