Governor Orji promises hell for Kidnappers, to rid Abia of criminals

Governor Theodore Orji while receiving five Toyota Hilux vans donated to the state by Diamond Bank Plc to assist the government in the fight against crime in Umuahia Thursday pledged to rid the state of
kidnappers.

He also expressed optimism that the state would not return to ''the dark days of kidnapping'', given the number of military formations established in different parts of the state.

The governor noted that the military formations were established in Ohafia, Aba and other border towns in Abia as part of the coordinated initiatives to check kidnapping.

``We are on top of the situation and with the establishment of military formations in Ohafia, Aba and other towns, I don’t think we can go back to the dark days of kidnapping,’’ he said.

Orji said that the government was committed to the sustenance of the current security situation in the state.

He, therefore, appealed to other corporate organisations ``to contribute their quota’’ towards the provision of security for lives and property.

The governor recalled that economic and commercial activities were grounded about two years ago when kidnappers held the state to ransom.

``Once there is no security nothing works,’’ he said.

He said banks closed shop while contractors abandoned their projects, leaving the government and people at the mercy of the hoodlums while their nefarious activities lasted.

Orji said that it took the intervention of God and the Federal Government to rout the hoodlums out of Abia and restore normalcy in the state.

He commended Diamond Bank for the support and assured that the vehicles would be used in combating crime in the state.

Earlier while presenting the Hilux vans, the Group Managing Director Diamond Bank, Dr Alex Oti, commended the governor for stamping out kidnapping and ensuring adequate security of lives and property.

According to the Managing Director, the gesture was meant to ``consolidate our support to the governor’s initiative in providing security in all parts of Abia State''.

The ceremony was witnessed by the Minister for Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu and the Director-General, Security and Exchange Commission, Ms Arunma Oteh, Abia State commissioner of police, Mr. Ambrose Aisabor, among other dignitaries.
