Pastor held over gun possession

THE police in Benue State under the aegis of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have arrested the Katsina-Ala resident pastor of a Church (names withheld) in Katsina-Ala Council of Benue State for illegal possession of fire-arms.

we gathered that the arrest, which took place in the church yard last Tuesday by men of the SARS, followed a tip-off that the pastor had vowed to kill the accountant of the church (names withheld) during a disagreement over money.

Investigation also revealed that the pastor had allegedly ordered the accountant to handover all the church monies to him for execution of a project but the accountant refused to comply on the ground that the pastor
wanted to use the money for a project that the church council was not aware of.

The police source hinted that the Head of SARS in the area, Inspector Godwin Utenge, said that the accountant had shouted for help during the row, a development that attracted the attention of another church official who alerted the police. The police quickly drafted some armed men of the squad to the place and arrested the pastor.

It was further gathered that in the course of the scuffle, the accountant sustained major injury on the face and other parts of his body and was quickly rushed to a private hospital in Katsina-Ala where he is receiving medical attention.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Daniel Ezeala, confirmed the incident, saying “the arrested pastor was brought to the state command” and that he was to be charged to court for illegal possession of fire-arms.

He added that investigation into the matter was still in progress.
